Worldwide Terrorist Attacks 1970 - 2016

Note: You may need to wait several seconds for the visualization to load.

This visualization investigates global terrorism from 1970 to 2016. Each dot represents a terrorist attack in which there was at least one victim. The size of each dot is proportional to the number of victims: the largest and smallest points represent 1,500 and 1 people respectively. The color of each dot corresponds to one of eight attack types. The data can be filtered by year and by type of attack so that only the desired points are displayed. Updating the years will also update the line chart. Use the "Animate" button to see the evolution of attacks over the selected time period. The map can be navigated by clicking and dragging as well as scrolling to zoom. The color scale is uniform throughout all three visualizations.
